I have attended quite a few interviews lately; our interviews involve presentations. What I see during these things bewilders me. The other day was no exception. The problem revolved around one word. Energy.
If you can't act excited about your presentation then why should we?
Here are some sure fire ways to ensure that your presentation contains no energy:
Don't vary your voice! Nice and consistent does a great job of hiding excitement.
Have total apathy towards your topic. Not caring about your subject matter is a great way to keep the audience from becoming "riled-up."
By all means read your presentation. You don't practice reading. You don't rehearse reading. That means you can safely read your presentation without fear of causing excitement.
Make sure that you sit down for the entire presentation. There are times that sitting is a good idea. If your goal is to bore your audience to tears, then this is one of them.
Constantly repeat yourself. Most of use have to hear something 50 times before we get it. Thanks for going on and on and on and on and on …
In all seriousness, I don't understand why this is so hard. You want the job, right? If you want the job you should prepare for the interview presentation. Learn how to interview and rehearse and practice.
Most importantly, if you want the job perhaps you should show some excitement.

This is a great post, Jeff. It’s so funny, but more effective than the normal “DO THIS” list.
